A pointed pen nib looks like a simple piece of stamped steel, but every curve and cut on it has a job, and understanding the anatomy transforms troubleshooting from guesswork into diagnosis. When your ink will not flow, your hairlines catch, or your shades rail, the cause is almost always visible on the nib itself if you know what to look for. A few minutes learning the parts pays off every session afterward.

Start at the writing end. The tip, or point, is where metal meets paper, and running back from it is the slit, a fine cut dividing the front of the nib into two flexible arms called tines. This split is the heart of the whole instrument. When you press down, the tines spread apart, and ink stored on the underside flows into the widened gap, painting a broad stroke called a shade. Release the pressure and the tines snap together, and the line collapses back to a hairline. Everything a pointed pen does is a conversation between pressure and tine spread.

Move up the nib and you reach the vent hole, also called the breather hole or reservoir. It is the small round or heart-shaped opening where the slit terminates. It has two functions: it stops the slit from cracking further up the nib under repeated flexing, acting exactly like a drilled stop-hole in engineering, and it holds a small supply of ink that feeds down the slit as you write. When calligraphers say to dip up to the vent, this is the landmark they mean. Ink above it does little good, and ink well below it starves your strokes mid-word.

The wide flaring section behind the vent forms the shoulders, which taper into the body and finally the base or heel, the end you seat into the holder. The body carries the nib's stamped markings and provides the spring that returns the tines to center. Its curvature matters when mounting: the nib should slide between the metal petals of your holder's insert, or against the flange rim of an oblique, gripped firmly by the base with the tines left completely free to move. A nib seated crooked writes crooked, since one tine will touch paper before the other and hairlines turn ragged.

Flex describes how easily the tines spread, and it is the personality of a nib. Stiff nibs like the Nikko G demand real pressure to produce modest shades, which sounds like a limitation but is actually training wheels: they smooth out an unsteady hand. Soft nibs like the Brause EF66 bloom into dramatic swells at a whisper of pressure, rewarding experts and punishing everyone else. Related is fineness: a sharper point produces thinner hairlines but bites into paper more eagerly. Tip shape, tine length, and body stiffness together determine whether a nib feels buttery or scratchy under your particular hand, which is why nib preference is famously personal.

Anatomy also explains the common failures. Railroading, where a shade prints as two parallel lines with white in between, means the tines spread wider than the ink film could span, caused by too little ink, too fast a stroke, or too much pressure. Snagging on upstrokes means the tines are catching paper fibers, so lighten your touch or check for a bent tine tip, visible as a tiny hook under magnification. Ink refusing to flow points to leftover factory oil or dried ink clogging the slit. And when a well-used nib suddenly loses its snap and its hairlines thicken, the tines have fatigued and sprung apart permanently. Nibs are consumables, and retiring one is not a failure but the natural end of its service.
