Paper gets judged in shops by whiteness, which tells you nothing, and by weight, which tells you a little. The property that decides whether a nib glides or snags is sizing, the coating that stops liquid ink soaking into the fibres. Unsized paper feathers, so a hairline spreads into a furry line and a downstroke bleeds through to the sheet below; sized paper holds the edge. That one property splits this selection into stages of work rather than a ranking. Practice sheets are chosen for printed grids and slant angles plus enough smoothness to drill on, and 110 sheet pads exist because you will get through them at that rate. Marker and layout pads, quoted around 18lb or 70gsm, are the cheapest genuinely bleedproof surface and the reason practice often looks better than finished work. Cardstock in the 100lb to 110lb cover range, roughly 270gsm, is what a finished piece goes on: heavy enough not to cockle as ink dries, smooth enough for a pointed nib. Tracing pads at 24lb to 25lb exist so a guide sheet sits under a piece instead of being pencilled onto it. Watercolour paper at 140lb belongs here for washes and brush work only, since cold press tooth shreds a metal nib.
