Oblique holder

An oblique holder is a pen holder with a small metal flange that juts out to the side rather than sitting the nib in line with the shaft. That offset lets a right-handed writer keep the nib square to the slanted lines of copperplate or Spencerian script while still holding the pen at a comfortable angle, instead of twisting the wrist into an awkward position to match the slant.

Holders come in wood, resin or metal, with adjustable or fixed flanges. An adjustable flange lets you fine-tune the nib angle for your own handwriting slant, which matters because everyone's natural slant is slightly different. Some left-handed letterers use a left oblique holder or switch to a straight holder with an underwriting or overwriting grip instead, since a right-handed oblique often fights a left-handed motion.

When picking an oblique holder, check whether the flange is adjustable, how securely it grips different nib sizes, and whether the balance feels comfortable for long practice sessions. A common mistake is assuming an oblique holder is required for all pointed pen work. It is a convenience for matching a slant, not a strict requirement, and plenty of letterers do fine with a straight holder and a bit of wrist rotation.
