Guide sheet
A printed or overlaid sheet of baseline, x-height and slant lines used underneath practice paper to keep lettering consistent.
A guide sheet is a printed template of horizontal and slanted lines, usually showing a baseline, an x-height line, ascender and descender lines, and sometimes angled slant guides. It is placed under a sheet of translucent or lightweight practice paper so the lines show through, giving a consistent structure to letter height, spacing and slant without drawing on the actual practice page.
Guide sheets exist as printable PDFs, pre-printed pads, and reusable laminated or digital versions used with a light board. Slant angle and x-height ratio vary by script, so copperplate, Spencerian and modern calligraphy guide sheets are usually laid out differently to match the proportions each style expects, and some tools let letterers generate custom guides for a specific nib size or slant preference.
When choosing a guide sheet, match the slant angle and line spacing to the script being practiced, and consider whether a printed pad or a reusable digital template fits your workflow better. A common mistake is practicing without any guide at all too early, which lets inconsistent sizing and slant become habits that are harder to correct later. Guides are a training tool, not a permanent crutch, and most letterers phase them out gradually.
